Fall, Head Coach

Appoquinimink School District is hiring a full-time Head Coach for Boys Varsity Cross Country at Odessa High School, located in the United States, for the 2026–2027 school year.

About the Role

Working under the guidance of the Athletic Director, the Head Coach for Boys Varsity Cross Country is responsible for building and sustaining a competitive, athlete-centered program at Odessa High School. This is an opportunity to shape young distance runners into disciplined, high-performing student-athletes while fostering a culture of teamwork, academic accountability, and personal growth.

What You'll Do

• Design, plan, and lead all aspects of the varsity cross country program, including practices, conditioning, and race-day preparation
• Develop individualized and team training plans that advance athletic performance and sport-specific fitness
• Recruit, evaluate, and mentor student-athletes throughout the season
• Monitor academic progress and ensure athletes meet eligibility requirements
• Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director, school administration, parents, and athletes
• Enforce school district policies, safety standards, and DIAA (Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association) rules
• Manage equipment, coordinate transportation logistics, and oversee meet scheduling
• Model sportsmanship and reinforce the values of integrity and respect at all competitions

What We're Looking For

• Demonstrated coaching experience in cross country, distance running, or a closely related track and field discipline
• Strong knowledge of training methodology, periodization, and injury prevention for distance runners
• Ability to motivate and connect with high school athletes of varying skill levels
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Commitment to the academic and athletic development of student-athletes
• Ability to pass required background checks and meet all Appoquinimink School District employment standards
• Valid CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the season
