Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Operations

Zipline is seeking a Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Operations to help scale generative AI across one of the world's most complex autonomous logistics networks based in South San Francisco, California. You'll work hands-on with production systems, operational teams, and real-world challenges where AI directly impacts how millions of deliveries reach people globally.

About This Position

As a Forward Deployed AI Engineer, Operations at Zipline, you'll serve as the technical lead embedding GenAI into our operational infrastructure. This hands-on role reports directly to the Head of Operations and focuses on discovering where AI can solve meaningful problems across aviation, fulfillment, maintenance, and customer workflows. Your success is measured not by research papers or benchmarks, but by the AI systems operators trust and use every day in production environments.

Your Responsibilities

• Design, build, and deploy end-to-end generative AI tools addressing real operational bottlenecks across logistics, maintenance, fulfillment, and customer-facing teams
• Partner directly with operators, engineers, and business leaders to translate complex challenges into technical solutions
• Architect data pipelines and analytics systems that feed AI models and enable continuous improvement
• Take prototypes from concept to production, iterating with end users to ensure adoption and impact
• Establish AI practices and tooling standards that scale across Zipline's global operations

Requirements

• Proven track record building and shipping generative AI solutions in production environments
• Strong foundation in machine learning fundamentals including model evaluation, training concepts, and problem decomposition
• Demonstrated expertise with large language models, data engineering pipelines, and analytics platforms
• Proficiency in Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, C++, or equivalent programming languages
• Ability to distill complex operational problems into robust technical workflows
• Comfort working across technical and non-technical teams in fast-moving, collaborative environments
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% to Zipline sites for hands-on deployment and field work

This in-office position is based at our South San Francisco headquarters. The starting cash compensation range is $112,500–$300,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
