First Cook

What This Role Involves

As a First Cook at Northwell Health's Carmel facility, you're the backbone of our culinary operations. You'll oversee food preparation, guide kitchen staff in executing recipes with precision, and ensure every dish meets our rigorous standards for nutrition, presentation, and safety. This role combines hands-on cooking expertise with kitchen leadership and the satisfaction of nourishing those who need it most.

What You'll Do

• Prepare diverse meals using proper culinary techniques and food handling protocols
• Manage mise en place and kitchen station organization
• Oversee and mentor junior kitchen staff
• Monitor food costs and assist with inventory management
• Follow and enforce food safety and sanitation standards
• Collaborate with nutritionists and dietary supervisors on meal planning
• Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely and effectively
• Respond to special dietary requirements and medical nutrition needs

Skills & Qualifications

• Proven experience as a cook in a healthcare, institutional, or full-service restaurant kitchen
• Strong working knowledge of food safety and HACCP principles (ServSafe certification preferred)
• Ability to lead and train kitchen team members
• Proficiency with large-scale cooking equipment and food preparation
• Excellent time management and ability to work under pressure
• Commitment to cleanliness, quality, and patient care
• Valid Food Handler certification or willingness to obtain
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred
