About NYLAG
Since 1990, NYLAG has delivered free civil legal services, financial empowerment programs, strategic impact litigation, and policy advocacy to combat economic, racial, and social injustice in New York. Our Community Access Programs Unit connects individuals experiencing poverty and crisis with essential legal support, breaking down barriers to housing stability, income security, consumer protection, and fundamental rights.
What You'll Do
- Assist with intake interviews, case assessment, and client intake documentation for legal matters within the unit's focus areas
- Research and prepare legal memoranda on civil law issues affecting low-income communities in New York
- Support attorneys in case preparation, document review, and court filings
- Help coordinate community education workshops and legal clinics
- Contribute to policy advocacy initiatives by analyzing legal trends and documenting client impacts
- Draft client correspondence and supporting legal documents under attorney supervision
What We're Looking For
- Currently enrolled in an accredited law school, or recently graduated and bar-eligible
- Strong commitment to social and economic justice, with genuine interest in serving low-income communities
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with clients from diverse backgrounds
- Reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to take initiative on assigned projects
- Familiarity with civil legal issues—housing, employment, benefits, family law, or consumer protection—is helpful but not required
