About the Role
This position is a full-time, remote role with Project On Government Oversight (POGO). The Fact Checker/Editor will manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines. Responsibilities include reviewing and assessing written content to ensure accuracy, fairness, clarity, and nonpartisanship. They will also assist in proofreading, maintaining POGO’s style guide, collaborating with writers, and developing strategies that align with the organization's commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Responsibilities
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
- Review, assess, and provide feedback on written content to ensure accuracy, fairness, clarity, and nonpartisanship
- Assist in proofreading and maintaining POGO’s style guide
- Collaborate with writers to help their ideas and stories succeed
- Brainstorm, develop, and implement strategies that ensure written products reflect the organization's commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Maintain close collaboration and communication with other editorial team members
- Stay updated on best practices in fact checking and editing through regular professional development
What We're Looking For
We are seeking candidates with at least four years of experience in fact-checking or researching for a newsroom, nonprofit, or other content-producing organization. Demonstrated experience editing a range of different content types and the ability to fact-check various work including emails, op-eds, testimony, reports, and breaking news investigations is required. Knowledge of AP style is essential. A commitment to accuracy, nonpartisanship, and attention to detail is crucial. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to working in a collaborative, respectful manner and a demonstrated track record of taking initiative to solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances. Familiarity with US federal government policy, structure, and operations or general principles and best practices for public sector transparency and accountability would be a plus.
