Role Overview

This Environmental Scientist – Impact Assessment (Senior or Intermediate) position with GHD centres on assessing how proposed developments interact with ecosystems, resources and communities across the Newcastle Area. Whether operating at intermediate or senior level, you will deliver rigorous analysis that informs better decisions while supporting sustainable progress for the regions we serve. The work combines technical investigation, multidisciplinary collaboration and clear documentation, all grounded in a shared commitment to improving environmental outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead or support environmental impact assessments for varied infrastructure and development proposals
• Collect, review and interpret field and desktop data on ecological, hydrological and land-quality conditions
• Identify potential biophysical and social effects and propose effective avoidance or mitigation approaches
• Author precise assessment reports, maps and supporting technical appendices that withstand regulatory review
• Coordinate inputs from engineers, planners and specialist colleagues to deliver integrated findings
• Liaise with clients, agencies and community representatives to communicate assessment results clearly
• Maintain current knowledge of applicable environmental legislation, policies and guidelines
• Undertake site visits and surveys within the Newcastle Area as project needs require

What You Bring

• Tertiary qualification in environmental science, ecology or an allied discipline
• Demonstrated experience completing impact assessments at intermediate or senior professional level
• Sound grasp of Australian environmental assessment frameworks and approval pathways
• Strong analytical ability together with high-quality written and verbal communication skills
• Capacity to prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and produce defensible technical work
• Practical fieldwork competence and willingness to travel locally when required
• Collaborative outlook and genuine interest in sustainable community outcomes
