The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno is hiring a Specialist, Geologic Information to manage, organize, and share the geologic data and resources that serve Nevada's scientific community, policymakers, and public. This is a full-time position located in Sierra, Washoe County.
About the Role
As a Specialist, Geologic Information, you'll be the steward of Nevada's geologic data—ensuring that critical information about the state's geology, mineral resources, water systems, and natural hazards remains organized, accessible, and useful. The NBMG is Nevada's official geological survey, and your work will directly support research, resource management, environmental planning, and public understanding of our state's geological landscape.
What You'll Do
- Curate, catalog, and maintain digital and physical geologic collections and datasets
- Develop and manage geologic databases, ensuring data integrity and accessibility
- Work with GIS tools and mapping systems to visualize and present geologic information
- Assist researchers, students, and the public in locating and interpreting geologic data
- Contribute to reports, maps, and publications that communicate geologic findings
- Support field investigations and lab work related to Nevada's geology and mineral resources
- Collaborate across university departments and with state and federal geological agencies
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in geology, earth sciences, geographic information systems (GIS), or a related field
- Proficiency with GIS software and database management systems
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate data stewardship
- Ability to communicate complex geologic concepts to diverse audiences
- Experience organizing and maintaining scientific collections or datasets (preferred)
- Familiarity with geologic mapping, stratigraphy, or resource geology (desired)
