Prairie State Legal Services is hiring a full-time Staff Attorney for our Peoria office. In this position, you will defend the legal rights of vulnerable Peorians—including low-income individuals, older adults, veterans, and people living with disabilities—helping them overcome the civil legal barriers that stand between them and their basic needs.
About the Role
As a Staff Attorney with Prairie State Legal Services in Peoria, you will carry your own caseload and serve as the legal advocate for clients who have nowhere else to turn. You will handle every phase of a case from intake through resolution, representing clients before administrative agencies, courts, and opposing parties. Your work addresses real legal crises affecting real families in Peoria County.
What You'll Do
- Interview clients and assess their legal needs and eligibility
- Conduct legal research, analysis, and investigation on client matters
- Draft legal documents, motions, briefs, and correspondence
- Advocate for clients in negotiations, hearings, and court proceedings
- Maintain comprehensive case files and client documentation
- Coordinate with colleagues and community partners to deliver comprehensive support
- Participate in outreach, know-your-rights presentations, and community education
What We're Looking For
- Law degree (JD) and active Illinois bar license (or eligibility within 90 days)
- Genuine commitment to serving underserved and marginalized communities
- Excellent legal writing and advocacy skills
- Ability to manage a diverse caseload and work independently
- Collaborative approach to team-based legal work
- Experience or comfort with legal case management software
- Strong sense of purpose and belief in justice
