Senior Legal Counsel – Legal & Compliance

StepStone Group is hiring a Senior Legal Counsel for our New York City, New York office. This full-time position leads critical legal and compliance initiatives across our global private markets business.

About the Role

As Senior Legal Counsel at StepStone Group, you'll serve as a strategic advisor on our legal and regulatory matters. We're a global private markets specialist delivering tailored investment solutions, advisory services, and data-driven insights to institutional investors worldwide. In this role, you'll protect our business, ensure regulatory compliance, and support our growth across multiple jurisdictions.

What You'll Do

• Provide comprehensive legal counsel on corporate, securities, and regulatory matters affecting our investment platforms
• Develop and oversee compliance programs aligned with SEC, FINRA, and other applicable regulatory frameworks
• Review and negotiate material contracts, investment agreements, and partnership arrangements
• Advise senior leadership on legal risks and strategic business initiatives
• Collaborate across operations, compliance, and fund management to ensure legal alignment
• Monitor evolving regulations in the private markets and investment advisory space
• Support fund formation, investor relations, and operational initiatives

What We're Looking For

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar admission in a US jurisdiction
• Substantial professional experience in investment advisory, private markets, or financial services law
• Expert knowledge of securities laws, investment management regulations, and compliance frameworks
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal matters and counsel senior executives
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail
• Strategic mindset balancing legal risk management with business objectives
• Collaborative approach to cross-functional partnerships
