AbbVie is hiring a Principal Peptide Process Engineer, Research Scientist II to join its Product Development Science & Technology team in North Chicago, Lake County. In this full-time, on-site role, you will help move active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) processes from the laboratory bench to full commercial manufacturing.
About the Role
As a Process Engineer within Product Development Science & Technology, you will support API programs across the later stages of development, commercialization, and ongoing product life cycle. The core focus is ensuring that peptide and small-molecule processes can be operated safely, reliably, and at scale — turning early laboratory chemistry into robust, reproducible production steps.
Key Responsibilities
- Advance API process development through late-stage development, launch, and lifecycle management.
- Confirm that manufacturing processes are designed and executed with safety as the foundation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve challenges that surface when chemistry is scaled from lab quantities to production volumes.
- Engineer, refine, and put into practice dependable API process steps suited to a commercial manufacturing setting.
- Partner with cross-functional development and technology teams to transfer processes smoothly from R&D into the plant.
Qualifications
- Background in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Hands-on experience with API or peptide process development and scale-up activities.
- Working knowledge of process safety principles applied to pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to translate laboratory methods into validated, manufacturable processes.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across scientific and operations functions.
