Join Nationwide's Personal Lines underwriting team as a Senior Underwriter and make a real impact protecting customers' assets across any of the lower 48 U.S. states. In this full-time, remote role, you'll evaluate complex risks, guide agent relationships, and drive portfolio profitability while delivering outstanding service quality in the insurance industry.

What This Role Involves

You'll take on the core responsibilities of underwriting complex personal lines policies for a Fortune 100 carrier with deep market expertise. This position combines strategic decision-making with relationship management, where you'll assess risk, determine policy acceptability, and collaborate across sales, claims, and product teams to support profitable business growth. Your decisions matter—you'll have the authority to make underwriting choices that shape portfolio performance and agency success within your assigned territory.

Your Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal personal lines policies within your authority, using established guidelines and industry best practices
  • Manage an assigned underwriting territory to identify growth opportunities, track market trends, and ensure portfolio profitability
  • Evaluate risks with critical thinking, considering complex variables and recommending appropriate coverage options to maximize value for agents and customers
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with independent agents through regular communication and technical expertise
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Product, Sales, and Claims to develop solutions that balance risk selection, pricing, and service quality
  • Mentor less experienced underwriters and provide guidance on underwriting principles and decision-making
  • Respond promptly to agency requests and escalated issues within established service standards

Requirements

  • Two or more years of personal lines underwriting experience managing a book of business
  • Track record with a multiline insurance carrier preferred
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; pursuit of CPCU or related insurance coursework a plus
  • Strong analytical capabilities and proficiency with Excel and data analysis tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Ability to balance competing priorities: risk management, profitability, and customer-focused service
  • Adaptability and responsiveness to changing business needs

Salary range: $62,500–$115,500 nationally; expected starting range $62,500–$93,500. Work in a business casual environment with occasional travel to agencies and meetings. Training is thorough: roughly 6–8 weeks of virtual, instructor-led preparation (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Central Time) before transitioning to your remote schedule. This exempt position operates 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time post-training, based on territory needs.
