About the Role
We're seeking a skilled Shop Mechanic to provide expert maintenance and repair services for both bicycles and winter sports equipment. You'll work in our Santa Cruz location, serving customers who trust us with their most important outdoor gear. This is a full-time position where your technical expertise directly impacts customer satisfaction and safety.
What You'll Do
- Perform comprehensive bicycle repairs and maintenance, including wheel building, drivetrain adjustments, brake and cable service, and suspension work
- Execute ski and snowboard maintenance including edge sharpening, base repair, binding adjustment, and seasonal preparation
- Diagnose mechanical issues and communicate repair needs and costs clearly to customers
- Maintain organized work areas and manage inventory of parts and supplies
- Deliver exceptional customer service while explaining repair work and maintenance best practices
- Follow REI Co-op safety and quality standards for all work performed
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a bike mechanic, ski technician, or both
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot complex equipment issues
- Proficiency with standard shop tools and diagnostic equipment
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Current knowledge of industry standards and repair techniques
