Senior Tooling Engineer – Plastics Injection Molding

Zobility is seeking a Senior Tooling Engineer – Plastics Injection Molding in Troy, Oakland County, Michigan. This full-time position offers the opportunity to lead the engineering of precision tooling systems that drive production success across current operations and future growth initiatives.

What This Role Involves

As Senior Tooling Engineer at Zobility, you'll oversee the full lifecycle of injection molding tooling—from conceptual design through field validation. You'll take ownership of complex technical challenges, guide cross-functional teams, and ensure that every tool, fixture, and piece of equipment meets exacting performance standards. This role sits at the intersection of design engineering, manufacturing operations, and quality assurance, making it essential to Zobility's competitive edge in plastics injection molding.

Your Responsibilities

• Develop and direct the design, construction, and commissioning of new tooling systems, fixtures, and equipment for program launches and production enhancements
• Partner with tool-room staff and external vendors to diagnose and resolve production issues, tool performance gaps, and process-related challenges
• Lead root-cause analysis and troubleshooting during tool tryouts, pilot builds, and ramp-up phases for new programs
• Estimate project timelines, resource requirements, and budgets for tooling initiatives
• Review, prioritize, and execute engineering changes that optimize tool performance, extend equipment life, and improve manufacturing efficiency
• Collaborate with product design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure tooling specifications align with product and process requirements

Qualifications

• 7+ years of hands-on experience in tooling engineering, tool design, or manufacturing engineering within injection molding or similar precision manufacturing environments
• Demonstrated expertise in tool design principles, CAD modeling, fixture design, and injection molding process fundamentals
• Proven ability to lead technical problem-solving, manage vendor relationships, and deliver results under production timelines
• Strong knowledge of tooling materials, manufacturing processes, and equipment maintenance
• Excellent communication and project management skills with ability to influence cross-functional teams
• High school diploma or equivalent; Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related field preferred
