CALSTART is hiring a Senior Manager, Communications to lead public relations and strategic storytelling for one of the nation's leading clean transportation organizations. About the Role
As Senior Manager, Communications at CALSTART, you will direct integrated communications across the organization's brand, programs, and policy work. The position blends hands-on writing and media engagement with cross-team partnership to amplify CALSTART's push for clean transportation technology and supportive public policy. Backgrounds in automotive, clean mobility, or nonprofit communications are strongly favored, and experience championing policy efforts is a meaningful plus.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and run an integrated communications strategy tied to CALSTART's mission, programs, and policy goals.
- Shape a unified brand voice and consistent messaging across every channel and initiative.
- Earn media placements across national, trade, regional, and digital outlets while cultivating journalist relationships.
- Draft press releases, op-eds, talking points, policy briefs, and executive briefing materials.
- Field media inquiries, prepare spokespeople, and coordinate interviews and appearances.
- Produce high-impact content including blogs, newsletters, annual reports, case studies, and multi-channel assets.
- Partner with web and integrated marketing teams to strengthen CALSTART.org, social engagement, and email outreach.
- Plan briefings, roundtables, webinars, and events connecting CALSTART with policymakers, funders, and partners.
- Define and monitor KPIs such as media impressions, share of voice, and web traffic, adjusting tactics from analytics.
- Uphold donor communications policies and proper disclosure for funded programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; a Master's in Communications, Public Affairs, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
- 7–10+ years in communications, public relations, or comparable roles; automotive, clean transportation, or nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success promoting policy initiatives at the federal, state, or local level.
- Outstanding writing and storytelling skills with a portfolio of press materials, op-eds, reports, and briefs.
- Sharp media relations instincts, including securing coverage and managing crises.
- Talent for turning technical subjects into clear messaging, plus a collaborative, hands-on mindset and the ability to influence without formal authority.
