Legal People is recruiting a Disputes & Insolvency Lawyer (Senior Associate/Special Counsel) for a full-time role based in Melbourne, Victoria. Step into a senior disputers position at a highly regarded law firm in Melbourne’s CBD and take ownership of sophisticated commercial litigation and insolvency work.

Role Overview

This Disputes & Insolvency Lawyer (Senior Associate/Special Counsel) opportunity with Legal People places you at the centre of complex commercial litigation files within a well-established Melbourne CBD practice. You will bring between three and eight years of post-admission experience focused on disputes and insolvency, shape the direction of significant matters, and work alongside the Litigation Director to secure strong commercial results for clients. The full-time appointment suits an ambitious senior lawyer ready to operate with substantial autonomy while remaining closely connected to firm leadership.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Shape and execute legal strategies across complex commercial disputes and insolvency proceedings
  • Take day-to-day control of high-stakes litigation files from issue of proceedings through to final resolution
  • Partner closely with the Litigation Director on tactical decisions, staffing and client reporting
  • Provide clear commercial advice to clients on risk exposure, recovery options and settlement pathways
  • Draft pleadings, affidavit material and other court documents and brief external counsel when required
  • Conduct negotiations, attend mediations and appear at interlocutory hearings as needed

Requirements

  • Three to eight years’ post-admission experience dedicated to Disputes & Insolvency work
  • Proven capacity to run substantial commercial litigation matters independently yet collaboratively
  • Sound commercial judgement and the ability to balance legal risk against client commercial objectives
  • Clear written and advocacy skills suited to high-value disputes and direct director-level engagement
