Role Overview
In the Seasonal Chef Instructor, Pastry (Sur La Table) position near North Bethesda, Maryland, you become the trusted guide for patrons eager to master frosting, doughs, decorating, and oven science. You deliver clear, encouraging lessons that follow established class plans while highlighting the tools and ware that make every recipe succeed. Success is measured through full enrollment, enthusiastic feedback, and continued interest in additional sessions and kitchen merchandise. You also support daily kitchen readiness so every workshop runs smoothly and safely.
Your Responsibilities
- Lead pastry and baking workshops that create memorable learning moments and encourage guests to return for more classes and shopping.
- Explain advanced techniques and core baking principles in an upbeat, easy-to-follow style that builds participant confidence.
- Stay current on merchandise, attend available training, and independently expand your knowledge base.
- Encourage enrollment in future classes and suggest the bakeware, mixers, and decorating tools demonstrated during instruction to strengthen sales.
- Meet class revenue and participation targets through consistent excellence that earns strong guest reviews.
- Prepare ingredients, organize stations before each session, break everything down afterward, and keep dishes and equipment clean and ready.
- Restock and arrange kitchen supplies so the teaching space remains fully prepared.
- Follow all food-safety rules, local health codes, and sanitation practices at all times.
- Handle tools, ingredients, and equipment correctly to keep the kitchen safe and efficient.
- Track inventory carefully, limit waste, and manage related culinary expenses.
- When alcohol is involved, serve only according to state regulations, company guidelines, and age-verification requirements.
- Maintain overall store safety and cleanliness, reporting maintenance issues promptly.
- Record hours accurately and model full adherence to wage rules and operating procedures.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old at the time of hire.
- Culinary arts degree preferred; extensive kitchen experience and proven technical skill will also be considered.
- One to two years of kitchen operations experience.
- Valid Food Manager Certification.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Genuine passion for community connection and outstanding guest experiences.
- Ability to stand for up to four hours, move throughout the sales floor and stock areas, and lift merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Capability to discriminate flavors and aromas accurately; manual dexterity for chopping, whisking, slicing, and demonstrating techniques; comfort bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing ladders.
- Proficiency operating computers, POS systems, scanners, and keyboards.
- Availability for 12–16 hours per week on flexible schedules that include nights, weekends, and holidays, with reliable attendance and willingness to adjust assignments based on demand.
- Comfort working around open heat, temperature changes, and food allergens.
