Kvc Health Systems is hiring a Part Time Horticulture Specialist in Raytown, Jackson County to lead community food-growing initiatives that strengthen nutrition access and build resilience for youth in residential care and surrounding urban neighborhoods.
About the Role
This Part Time position brings horticultural expertise to an established mission: expanding fresh food availability for residents of Niles Home and families throughout Kansas City's urban core neighborhoods, including the Theron B Watkins community. You'll combine hands-on cultivation with community engagement to advance sustainable food security and build connections between young people and food systems.
What You'll Do
- Plan, establish, and maintain productive gardens and growing systems at residential and community locations across Jackson County
- Cultivate vegetables, fruits, and plants using sustainable and urban gardening best practices
- Harvest and process produce for distribution to residents and families served by the program
- Engage youth residents in gardening activities, building horticultural skills and food-system literacy
- Partner with program staff and community organizations to maximize garden productivity and educational outcomes
- Monitor soil health, manage pest control, and adapt growing strategies to seasonal conditions
What We're Looking For
- Practical experience in horticulture, gardening, or food production—whether professional, educational, or through sustained community initiatives
- Solid knowledge of vegetable gardening, plant cultivation, and sustainable growing methods
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions as part of a Part Time schedule
- Strong communication skills and genuine interest in mentoring youth and engaging families
- Self-directed problem-solving and flexibility in adapting horticultural plans to site and seasonal constraints
