Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Steerhand / Locator

McCall Thomas Engineering is hiring a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Steerhand and Locator to join our infrastructure installation team in Pecan Way Terrace, South Carolina. As an essential field professional, you'll operate and manage HDD locating equipment while working alongside experienced crews to install critical underground utilities across the region.

About the Role

This is a full-time position focused on horizontal directional drilling operations and locating. You'll be part of McCall Thomas Engineering's construction teams, contributing to major infrastructure projects that deliver telecommunications, power, water, sewer, and natural gas services to communities throughout the region. Your expertise will be essential to ensuring precise, safe underground utility installation.

What You'll Do

• Operate and monitor HDD locating equipment to track drill head position and direction throughout installations
• Communicate positioning data and location updates to the drilling operator in real time
• Work with construction teams to mark and identify underground utility locations before drilling begins
• Conduct pre-drill surveys and mark-out procedures for telecommunications, power, water, sewer, and gas lines
• Maintain accurate field documentation and comprehensive location records
• Identify and report potential hazards or obstructions during drilling operations
• Uphold on-site safety protocols and contribute to quality standards

What We're Looking For

• Demonstrated experience operating HDD locating equipment or similar underground utility detection systems
• Technical knowledge of horizontal directional drilling operations and locating techniques
• Ability to read and interpret project plans and specifications accurately
• Strong communication and coordination skills with field teams and operators
• Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in locate work
• Willingness to work outdoors in varied conditions and travel to multiple job sites
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet job site safety requirements
