About the Role
Within the Basic Books Group, you will work closely with two acquisitions editors who specialize in scholarly and trade nonfiction. The position offers a front‑row view of how manuscripts move from proposal to published book, providing hands‑on experience in editorial workflows, rights coordination, and project tracking for a list that shapes public understanding of history and science.
What You'll Do
- Assist editors with manuscript intake, including logging submissions, preparing reader reports, and maintaining accurate databases.
- Coordinate the production schedule by liaising with design, marketing, and rights teams to ensure timely delivery of each title.
- Perform fact‑checking, reference verification, and light copyediting on proposals and drafts under editor supervision.
- Prepare correspondence with agents, authors, and external contributors, tracking responses and follow‑up actions.
- Help organize editorial meetings, compile agenda materials, and distribute minutes to stakeholders.
- Support the preparation of catalog copy, jacket copy, and promotional materials for upcoming releases.
- Maintain confidentiality of unpublished material and adhere to company standards for data security.
What We're Looking For
- A bachelor’s degree in English, History, Sciences, or a related field; coursework or experience in publishing is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with attention to detail and a keen eye for consistency.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with editorial tracking systems (such as Editorial Manager or similar) is advantageous.
- Demonstrated interest in nonfiction, particularly works covering ancient history, scientific discovery, or intellectual thought.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team while exercising independent judgment when needed.
- Professional demeanor and a commitment to upholding the integrity of the publishing process.
