Spencer-Owen Community Schools is hiring Cooks for its Central, Elmore County kitchen team, where you will help prepare nutritious meals for students and staff.

About the Role

This full‑time position supports the district’s food service program by assisting with daily meal preparation, following federal and state nutrition guidelines, and maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment. The role reports to the food service manager and works closely with other support staff to ensure that breakfast and lunch services run smoothly each school day.

What You'll Do

• Prepare and portion hot and cold menu items according to standardized recipes and portion control charts.
• Operate kitchen equipment such as ovens, steamers, slicers, and food processors safely and efficiently.
• Monitor food temperatures and storage conditions to comply with health department regulations.
• Assist with receiving deliveries, verifying quantities, and storing supplies in designated areas.
• Clean and sanitize work surfaces, utensils, and equipment after each service period.
• Support special event catering and summer feeding programs when needed.
• Participate in monthly safety training and maintain up‑to‑date food handler certification.
• Communicate any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the supervisor promptly.

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent; prior experience in school, hospital, or restaurant cooking preferred.
• Valid food handler’s permit or willingness to obtain one upon hire.
• Ability to follow recipes accurately and adjust quantities for varying serving sizes.
• Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and time management in a fast‑paced kitchen.
• Good interpersonal skills for interacting with students, teachers, and parents.
• Reliable attendance and willingness to work early morning shifts to support breakfast service.
