Controls Engineer

Wunderlich-Malec is seeking a Controls Engineer to join our team in Reston, Fairfax County, Virginia. This is a full-time position with one of the nation's largest and longest-established engineering firms.

Role Overview

As a Controls Engineer at Wunderlich-Malec, you'll design, develop, and implement control systems that power industrial and infrastructure projects across the country. Working within our Systems Integration division, you'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver sophisticated automation solutions that meet rigorous performance and safety standards. Your technical expertise will directly impact projects serving utilities, manufacturing, and critical infrastructure sectors.

Your Responsibilities

• Design and engineer automated control systems, including PLC, SCADA, and distributed control architectures
• Develop control logic, algorithms, and software configurations to meet project specifications and industry standards
• Conduct system integration testing, troubleshooting, and validation across electrical and mechanical subsystems
• Create technical documentation, including control narratives, system drawings, and operational manuals
• Collaborate with project managers, field teams, and clients throughout implementation and commissioning
• Support existing installations with technical guidance and system optimization recommendations

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related discipline; equivalent professional experience considered
• Demonstrated experience with industrial control systems, PLC programming, and automation fundamentals
• Proficiency with control system software platforms and programming languages commonly used in systems integration
• Strong foundation in electrical theory, circuits, and industrial electrical systems
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and control system documentation
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
