Position Summary

Mercor is seeking a Computational Seismology & Geophysics Expert to join our team. This full-time, on-site position in Germany (nationwide) (nationwide) offers competitive compensation of $70–$85/hour.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design challenging computational problems to evaluate AI capabilities in solving scientific tasks.
  • Develop and test problems using specialized scientific software such as SPECFEM, ObsPy, and Pyrocko.
  • Collaborate on AI model training, evaluation, and improvement in computational seismology.
  • Independently refine problem designs based on feedback to ensure optimal challenge difficulty.

What You Bring

  • A graduate-level degree (MS, PhD) or equivalent research experience in a relevant STEM field.
  • Proven proficiency with at least one scientific software library such as SPECFEM, ObsPy, etc.
  • Strong Python skills for writing problem setups and solution validators.
  • The ability to work independently in a Linux/terminal environment.
  • A commitment of 15–20 hours per week.
  • Experience across multiple listed domains or tools is preferred.
  • Familiarity with benchmark or evaluation design, scientific teaching, or exam/problem-set design is beneficial.
  • Background in computational reproducibility and containerized environments is a plus.
