Maintenance Technician I

Summit School Services is hiring a Maintenance Technician I to maintain our school bus fleet and support safe, reliable transportation for students across Badger, Fairbanks North Star. This is a full-time position in Alaska where your technical expertise keeps our vehicles road-ready and our routes on schedule.

Position Summary

In this hands-on role, you'll take ownership of preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on our fleet of school buses. Your work ensures every vehicle meets federal DOT standards, state inspection requirements, and internal readiness protocols before it carries students. You'll perform detailed vehicle inspections, document findings, and execute repairs that span multiple systems—from braking and suspension to electrical and HVAC—so routes depart safely and on time.

Responsibilities

• Conduct advanced diagnostic testing and troubleshooting on school bus powertrains, engines, and electrical systems
• Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer specifications and DOT regulations
• Execute DOT inspections and coordinate state-mandated safety certifications
• Prepare vehicles for DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) readiness and resolve reported defects
• Service and repair air and hydraulic braking systems, steering, and suspension components
• Maintain, repair, and test electrical systems and charging infrastructure
• Diagnose and repair HVAC systems to ensure passenger comfort and safety
• Document all maintenance work and keep detailed service records

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver's license and ability to pass a background check
• Demonstrated experience with fleet or commercial vehicle maintenance
• Proficiency with diagnostic tools and service documentation systems
• Strong understanding of heavy-duty vehicle systems and safety standards
• Ability to work independently and communicate findings clearly
• Commitment to safety and quality workmanship
