Junior Security Engineer

Maximus is hiring a Junior Security Engineer to join our cybersecurity operations team in Bangor, Penobscot County. This full-time position offers hands-on experience in enterprise security monitoring and incident response, working alongside seasoned security professionals who will guide your growth in the field.

About the Role

You'll support Maximus's mission-critical security operations by providing around-the-clock monitoring, threat detection, and incident containment across our enterprise infrastructure. Working within a dedicated security team, you'll execute real-world cybersecurity procedures, learn to identify and neutralize security threats, and participate in the full lifecycle of incident response. This role emphasizes practical, on-the-job mentorship to accelerate your development as a security professional.

What You'll Do

• Monitor systems and networks for suspicious activity, security anomalies, and potential threats
• Execute access controls, account restrictions, and user remediation during security incidents
• Remove compromised applications and implement system hardening configurations
• Document security events, response actions, and findings with accuracy and clarity
• Assist senior security engineers in executing directed security operations and defense strategies
• Participate in on-call rotations to maintain continuous security coverage

What We're Looking For

• Foundation in cybersecurity concepts and operational security practices
• Working knowledge of Windows and/or Linux systems administration
• Basic understanding of networking, TCP/IP protocols, and infrastructure security
• Clear written and verbal communication skills for documenting and reporting findings
• Availability and willingness to work rotating shifts and on-call schedules
• Genuine interest in building expertise in cybersecurity and supporting a technical team environment
