Mechanic Supervisor

The Mechanic Supervisor role at 92nd Street Y is based in East Harlem, Manhattan and is a full‑time position responsible for leading the facility’s mechanical maintenance team.

About the Role

This position directs daily mechanic operations, provides support for HVAC supervision when required, and ensures that all equipment remains safe, functional, and ready for use. The role involves being on call for emergency situations outside regular hours, with a commitment to respond to urgent calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What You'll Do

• Oversee the inspection, maintenance, installation, and repair of mechanical systems throughout the building.
• Assign and monitor work orders for the mechanic team, ensuring tasks are completed on schedule and to quality standards.
• Assist with the supervision of HVAC equipment, including routine checks and minor repairs.
• Respond to emergency service requests after normal business hours, providing timely troubleshooting and resolution.
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, parts usage, and service histories.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs or parts procurement.
• Enforce workplace safety protocols and conduct regular safety briefings with the team.
• Train and mentor junior mechanics, fostering skill development and adherence to best practices.

What We're Looking For

• Several years of hands‑on experience as a mechanic, preferably in a commercial or institutional setting.
• Proven ability to lead a technical team, including scheduling, performance feedback, and conflict resolution.
• Solid understanding of mechanical systems, plumbing, electrical basics, and HVAC fundamentals.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and the capacity to diagnose issues quickly under pressure.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and on‑call rotations for emergency response.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for off‑site parts pick‑ups or vendor visits.
• Excellent communication abilities to interact with staff, supervisors, and external service providers.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following all relevant regulations.
