Packaging Engineering Lead

J&J Snack Foods, an industry leader in snack food manufacturing and distribution for over 50 years, is hiring a Packaging Engineering Lead in La Vergne, Rutherford County, Tennessee. This is a full-time position leading the design, development, and optimization of packaging systems for our iconic brands including SUPERPRETZEL, ICEE, Dippin' Dots, LUIGI'S Real Italian Ice, The Funnel Cake Factory, and Hola Churros.

About the Role

You'll direct the packaging engineering function, driving innovation in packaging design and process improvements that serve our national foodservice and retail distribution network. This leadership role focuses on balancing product protection, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and sustainability across our diverse portfolio of frozen treats, snacks, and specialty foods.

What You'll Do

• Lead the development and optimization of packaging designs for new products and brand innovations
• Oversee packaging specifications, materials selection, and supplier quality management
• Ensure all packaging meets food safety regulations, labeling requirements, and industry standards
• Drive cost reduction initiatives while maintaining product integrity and shelf appeal
• Champion sustainability efforts in packaging material selection and waste reduction
• Collaborate with production, quality assurance, product development, and supply chain teams
• Support product launches and line extensions from concept through commercialization
• Manage packaging vendor relationships and negotiate supplier agreements
• Establish and maintain packaging design documentation and change control processes

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field
• 5+ years of packaging engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership capacity
• Strong knowledge of packaging materials, processes, and equipment
• Experience in food or beverage packaging preferred
• Proficiency with packaging design and CAD software
• Understanding of food safety, FDA regulations, and packaging compliance
• Excellent problem-solving and project management skills
• Strong communication and cross-functional team leadership abilities
