Public Safety Officer I

This full-time, non-exempt hourly position places you at the forefront of campus security, where you'll protect students, faculty, and staff while fostering a safe learning environment.

About the Role

As a Public Safety Officer I at St Thomas University, you'll be the trusted guardian of our campus. Your role combines proactive patrols, emergency response, and community engagement to ensure the safety and security of our residential and academic facilities. You'll be a visible, approachable presence that students and employees can rely on, working across campus grounds, residence halls, and the surrounding university footprint.

What You'll Do

• Conduct regular patrols of campus facilities, residence halls, and grounds to maintain order and deter security threats
• Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies, and safety calls across campus
• Document incidents and prepare clear, detailed reports following university and legal protocols
• Support the wellbeing and safety of student residents and campus community members
• Coordinate and communicate with campus departments, including Student Affairs and Student Life, on security matters
• Assist with access control and security checkpoints at university facilities
• Build positive relationships with students and staff to strengthen campus safety culture

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record
• Physical ability to patrol campus grounds and respond to emergencies
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to remain calm and respond professionally in high-pressure situations
• Commitment to supporting student safety and university community wellbeing
• Prior security, law enforcement, or military experience is a plus
