Join ACLU of Massachusetts as an Advocacy Policy Counsel, a full-time position based in Boston, Suffolk County. In this role, you'll combine legal expertise with policy analysis to advance civil rights and civil liberties across Massachusetts through research-backed advocacy, legislative strategy, and collaborative partnership with our Public Advocacy department.

About the Role

This position sits at the intersection of law and public policy, where your legal analysis directly shapes our advocacy priorities and legislative strategy. You'll serve as a trusted legal advisor to ACLU of Massachusetts, conducting rigorous research and translating complex legal concepts into actionable policy recommendations that protect fundamental freedoms.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research on civil rights and civil liberties issues affecting Massachusetts residents
  • Prepare legal analyses and memoranda to inform organizational policy positions and advocacy campaigns
  • Draft legislation and policy proposals that strengthen protections for constitutional rights
  • Support legislative advocacy efforts by developing fact sheets, testimony, and briefing materials
  • Monitor proposed legislation and regulatory developments relevant to ACLU priorities
  • Collaborate with departmental colleagues, advocacy teams, and external partners to identify emerging civil rights concerns
  • Contribute to special projects that advance our mission to defend and promote civil rights in the Commonwealth

What We're Looking For

  • Juris Doctor degree and active Massachusetts bar license (or strong path to admission)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of civil rights law, constitutional law, or related policy areas
  • Strong legal research and writing skills with ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly
  • Experience with legislative processes, policy analysis, or advocacy work
  • Excellent attention to detail and capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Commitment to civil rights and civil liberties advocacy
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and build effective partnerships
