Cogent Bank is seeking an External Residential Mortgage Loan Originator to join our Florida-based team. In this full-time position, you'll drive loan origination efforts by building relationships with external sources, counseling clients through the mortgage process, and maintaining the highest standards of service and underwriting quality.
About the Role
As an External Residential Mortgage Loan Originator, you'll be the primary point of contact for clients and business partners seeking residential financing solutions. You'll leverage your network and market presence to identify lending opportunities, guide borrowers through application and documentation, and ensure every loan meets our credit and compliance standards. Your success will depend on your ability to balance volume with quality, maintain strong client relationships, and stay current with residential lending market conditions in your territory.
What You'll Do
- Originate and develop residential mortgage loans through external referral sources, partnerships, and business development initiatives
- Consult with prospective borrowers to assess their financing needs, explain loan products, and guide them through the application process
- Prepare and review mortgage documents, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance
- Maintain and expand a network of real estate agents, financial advisors, builders, and other referral partners
- Monitor market trends and borrower demand to identify growth opportunities within your local market
- Coordinate with loan processors and underwriters to move applications through to closing
- Meet or exceed loan origination targets while maintaining portfolio quality
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience originating residential mortgage loans and demonstrating a track record of consistent production
- Strong business development and client relationship management skills
- Deep familiarity with residential lending products, guidelines, and underwriting standards
- Excellent communication and consultative sales abilities
- Thorough knowledge of local real estate markets and existing professional network
- Ability to work independently and manage your own client pipeline
- Commitment to regulatory compliance and ethical lending practices
