Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks a Building Operations & Controls Engineer 2 to join our facilities and operations team in State House, Lancaster County. In this full-time position, you'll optimize and maintain the sophisticated building systems and automated controls that support our mission-critical research and laboratory operations.
About the Role
As a Building Operations & Controls Engineer 2, you'll take a leading technical role in the management, optimization, and evolution of our building automation and controls infrastructure. You'll work with state-of-the-art systems that regulate HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and energy management across our facilities. Your expertise will directly impact both operational efficiency and the reliability of our research environments.
What You'll Do
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize building automation and controls systems to ensure peak performance and energy efficiency
- Design, specify, and oversee installation and commissioning of new or upgraded controls systems
- Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC, electrical, and mechanical building systems
- Analyze building performance data and recommend improvements to reduce energy consumption and operational costs
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, system diagrams, and operational procedures
- Ensure all work complies with safety codes, environmental regulations, and laboratory standards
- Collaborate with facilities, engineering, and research teams to support facility needs and priorities
- Train facilities staff on system operation and best practices
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with building automation systems, controls engineering, or facilities management
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, building energy management, and control system programming or configuration
- Proficiency with building automation platforms and control system software
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail and strong communication skills
- Relevant certifications (such as BAS, BEM, or similar) are a plus
