About the Role
This part-time coaching position offers the opportunity to build and mentor a competitive cross country team. You'll provide experienced instruction, strategic leadership, and direct oversight of student-athletes as they train, compete, and grow through the sport. High school cross country coaching combines athletic development with mentorship, creating an environment where young runners discover their potential and build lasting discipline.
What You'll Do
- Design and lead daily practice sessions focused on progressive training, proper running technique, and tactical race strategy
- Plan competitive schedules, prepare athletes for meets, and provide coaching during competitions
- Monitor student-athlete academic progress in coordination with teachers and school counselors, ensuring athletic participation supports academic success
- Foster a culture emphasizing teamwork, mutual support, and personal achievement within the program
- Maintain fitness standards, track athlete performance data, and adjust training plans based on individual and team progress
- Communicate regularly with athletes, families, and school administration regarding program updates and expectations
What We're Looking For
- Experience coaching cross country or distance running at the high school level
- Deep knowledge of cross country training principles, race tactics, and athletic development
- Strong communication and mentoring skills with the ability to motivate diverse student-athletes
- Commitment to academic integrity and student-athlete welfare
- Ability to work collaboratively with school staff, parents, and athletic administrators
- Current or ability to obtain required coaching certifications as mandated by KCMO
