How to use this kit

Ground every answer in facts on this page and the original listing. We never invent Glassdoor-style reviews or salaries that are not in our data.

Interview prep

Prepare examples of staying calm overnight, handling challenging behaviour, confidentiality, and when you escalate. Ask about rota pattern, service user needs, lone-working, and induction at The Society of St James.

Fit summary

Strong fit if you are steady on nights, empathetic, and comfortable with hands-on support work in Southampton residential/community settings—less so if you need daytime-only hours or purely clinical roles.

Day in the role

As a Waking Night Support Worker with The Society of St James in Southampton, you stay awake through the night shift to keep service users safe and settled. Typical duties include welfare checks, calm responses to distress or incidents, following care plans, logging notes, and handing over clearly to the day team. The work is residential/support-focused rather than clinical nursing, with quiet periods mixed with urgent needs.

Skills to emphasize

Build reliability on nights, de-escalation, risk awareness, accurate recording, and teamwork on handover. First aid, safeguarding, and medication-awareness training (employer-led where required) matter more here than formal commercial cert stacks—no specific paid cert list is available for this listing.

FAQ from this listing

Is this a sleeping or waking night role?

The title is waking night support: you remain awake and available through the shift, not a sleep-in arrangement.

Where is the job based?

Southampton, Hampshire (England)—a large southern port city, not the U.S. location sometimes returned by generic geocoders.

What experience helps most?

Prior support work, care, or residential experience plus clear communication and overnight stamina; employers often train role-specific procedures.
