Set Designer and builder, youth theater

Barrington Stage Company seeks a talented Set Designer and Builder to join our Education department for a full-time position this summer in Allendale, Berkshire County. About the Role

As Set Designer and Builder with Barrington Stage Company's youth theater program, you'll take creative concepts and bring them to life through thoughtful design and skilled construction. Working closely with the Director of Education and Director of Devised Theatre Ensemble, you'll design and build sets that enhance storytelling while meeting the unique needs of an educational theater environment. This role combines artistry with technical problem-solving—you'll work with diverse materials and construction techniques to deliver finished sets that inspire young performers and engage audiences.

What You'll Do

• Design and construct scenic elements for youth theater productions
• Collaborate with directors, educators, and the design team to translate creative vision into physical sets
• Select and work with appropriate materials, tools, and construction methods for each project
• Manage timelines to ensure sets are completed and installed on schedule
• Problem-solve design and construction challenges creatively and efficiently
• Maintain a safe, organized workshop environment
• Attend production meetings and coordinate with the broader creative team

What We're Looking For

• Demonstrated experience in set design, construction, or a related theatrical craft
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and common construction techniques
• Strong spatial reasoning and the ability to visualize designs in three dimensions
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Physical capability to perform construction work safely
• Passion for theater and commitment to supporting youth artists

Position Details

This full-time position runs from June 29, 2026 through July 25, 2026. You'll work Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with production meetings as needed. The role is based onsite at Berkshire community college in Allendale, and housing is available for this summer position.
