About the Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer specializing in the Appian platform, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that Appian remains fast, scalable, and adept at handling the diverse tasks configured by our customers. Your primary focus will be on the design, development, and maintenance of complex software systems, while also providing technical leadership and mentorship. You will be instrumental in building a product that serves our customers in innovative ways. This role requires not only extensive coding expertise but also a strong emphasis on system orchestration, the utilization of AI tools and integrations (such as RAG, agentic workflows, MCP), and aligning technical decisions with overarching business strategies.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Software Engineer is not merely a faster coder; they are accountable for the overall health of the codebase and the growth of the engineering team.

  • Code Quality & Standards: Establish and uphold the “gold standard” for clean, maintainable, and well-documented code throughout the repository.
  • Architecture & Design: Lead high-level design sessions, select appropriate architectural patterns (Microservices, Serverless, Event-driven), and ensure that systems are both scalable and secure.
  • Developer Enablement: Develop internal tools and “Golden Paths” that simplify the complexities of the underlying infrastructure for feature teams.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentor junior engineers, conduct thorough code reviews, and set the “gold standard” for clean, maintainable, and well-documented code across the repository.
  • Project Ownership: Oversee features from requirement analysis through to deployment, which includes breaking down complex business objectives into manageable technical tasks.
  • Problem Solving: Address challenging issues by debugging production outages, optimizing performance bottlenecks, and resolving high-level logic problems.
  • Collaboration: Facilitate feature development by collaborating within and across teams, engaging with stakeholders such as Product Owners.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Preferred educational background from a highly selective, premier engineering institution with a focus on Computer Science fundamentals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Ability to leverage knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns to develop software in a full-stack Java and web technology environment.
  • Proven experience in building and scaling distributed systems, preferably within cloud-native environments.
  • Experience in identifying bottlenecks and optimizing the performance of large codebases.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML adoption and the integration of intelligent features into standard workflows.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or small project teams.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise application architecture.

Technical Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Software Engineering, Algorithms, and Data Structures.
  • Proficiency in at least one major programming language (Java, C++, or similar).
  • Practical experience with container technologies (Docker), orchestration frameworks (Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with performance monitoring tools such as Grafana and Prometheus is preferred.
  • Familiarity with AWS cloud platforms and modern database technologies is preferred.
  • Experience utilizing AI tools and models like Amazon Q, Kiro, and Claude is preferred.

Soft Skills

  • Clear Communication: Ability to articulate technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strategic Thinking: Understanding the business context—focusing not just on developing “cool” technology but on creating the right technology for the customer.
  • Mentorship: A genuine commitment to elevating the skills of fellow engineers.
