Senior Software Engineer – Java

As a Backend Engineer, you’ll be part of a collaborative, high-impact team working to create scalable, reliable systems behind some of the most intuitive tools on the web. Whether you’ve been in the industry for three years or twenty, if you’re passionate about designing elegant solutions— we want to hear from you. This is a hybrid role working from our NYC office 3 days per week. You will report to the Engineering Team Manager.

We’re hiring across several impactful R&D teams. Based on your experience and interests, you could join one of the following:

• SQSP Payments is dedicated to simplifying the financial side of commerce, enabling merchants to securely and reliably collect payments from their customers with minimal effort. Our team’s mission is to build and maintain systems that allow merchants to focus on what matters most: growing their brand.
• User Platform owns Squarespace’s core identity infrastructure — authentication, authorization, and profile management — relied on by dozens of engineering teams across the company.

You’ll Get To…

• Build scalable backend services in Java and related technologies.
• Write clean, efficient code that powers high-traffic, production-ready systems.
• Contribute to design decisions and architectural discussions.
• Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers.
• Create features from concept through implementation to launch.

Who We’re Looking For

• 7+ years of professional experience in backend development using Java, Python, C, or similar languages
• Experience building large-scale, distributed systems
• Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and system design
• Comfortable working in collaborative environments where feedback is valued
• A degree in Computer Science — or equivalent industry experience that speaks for itself

Cash Compensation Range: $128,500 – $231,500 USD

The base salary for this position will vary based on job-related criteria including relevant skills, experience, and location, among other factors.

In addition to the cash compensation above (which includes base salary and, where applicable for eligible roles, may include overtime pay), Squarespace employees are eligible to be granted an option to purchase our common stock. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive structure in addition to base salary.
