Scout AI in Sunnyvale, California is hiring a Senior IT Infrastructure & Security Engineer to architect and operate a secure, defense-grade network and infrastructure platform that protects sensitive government data and maintains CMMC Level 2 compliance.
The Opportunity
As our first dedicated infrastructure and security engineer, you'll design and operate Scout's complete IT infrastructure ecosystem. This combines network architecture, cloud operations, infrastructure automation, and IT security to build a foundation that safeguards classified information. You'll own network segmentation, data protection, system monitoring, device management, and operational automation across the organization.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Design secure network topologies with segmentation and access controls aligned with NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC Level 2 standards
- Build and maintain compliance infrastructure including encryption, audit logging, and identity management
- Author and maintain Scout's System Security Plan and compliance documentation
- Implement network hardening, intrusion detection, and threat monitoring across firewalls and VPNs
- Deploy and manage cloud and on-premises infrastructure supporting company operations
- Manage employee device lifecycle: provisioning, OS updates, patching, and hardware refresh
- Design and implement automated identity provisioning and access control workflows
- Provide technical support to employees and manage IT helpdesk workflows
- Develop infrastructure-as-code solutions to automate provisioning, configuration, and scaling
- Write Python and Bash scripts to eliminate manual operational tasks and validate compliance controls
- Build monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to track system health and security events
- Design and test automated backup and disaster recovery procedures
- Lead incident response, conduct root cause analysis, and drive remediation
- Collaborate with the compliance team on policy, audit readiness, and CMMC assessment preparation
What You Bring
- 7+ years managing network and systems infrastructure at enterprise or defense-focused organizations
- Proven experience implementing CMMC Level 2 or NIST SP 800-171 security controls
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code frameworks and practices
- Strong expertise in Linux and Windows system administration across diverse environments
- Solid Python or Bash scripting skills focused on reducing manual operational work
- Strong grasp of network segmentation principles, access control frameworks, data encryption, and compliance-driven architecture
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing identity and access management systems
- Demonstrated precision in technical documentation and attention to system details
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts for audiences ranging from engineers to business stakeholders
- Proven success scaling infrastructure at startups or rapidly growing organizations
- Track record building automation solutions and internal tools that meaningfully improve operational efficiency
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency with eligibility to obtain a DoD security clearance
