Williamsburg James City School District invites applications for a full-time School Counselor at the secondary level. In this position, you'll deliver comprehensive counseling services that support students' academic success, emotional growth, and career readiness in Williamsburg, James City County.
About the Role
As a School Counselor, you will implement a school counseling program aligned with American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards. This is an exempt, teacher-grade position where you partner with students, families, and staff to remove barriers to learning and help every student thrive academically and personally.
What You'll Do
- Provide individual and small-group counseling to address social, emotional, and behavioral needs
- Advise students on course selection, academic planning, and graduation requirements
- Deliver career exploration and college preparation guidance
- Coordinate standardized testing and assessment programs
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and help struggling students
- Communicate with parents about student progress and available resources
- Advocate for equitable student access to advanced and rigorous academic opportunities
- Develop and lead classroom lessons on topics like goal-setting, study skills, and post-secondary planning
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in school counseling, counseling, psychology, education, or related field
- Current Virginia state licensure or certification as a school counselor (or eligibility)
- Demonstrated experience working with secondary students
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of ASCA National Standards and frameworks
- Ability to build trust, maintain confidentiality, and respond with cultural sensitivity
