About the Role
As a Sanctuary Assistant, you'll be the backbone of on-the-ground conservation efforts at one of America's most respected wildlife organizations. You'll work in outdoor settings managing sanctuary lands, restoring native habitats, and maintaining the natural spaces that sustain bird populations and biodiversity. This role blends physical fieldwork with ecological knowledge, making it ideal for someone passionate about direct conservation impact.
What You'll Do
- Conduct habitat restoration activities including invasive species removal, native plant propagation, and ecosystem recovery projects
- Maintain trails, facilities, and infrastructure across sanctuary properties
- Monitor wildlife populations and collect field data to support conservation research and decision-making
- Assist with prescribed burns, controlled vegetation management, and other land stewardship practices
- Support visitor engagement programs and lead environmental education activities on sanctuary grounds
- Operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles used in land management operations
- Document work activities and maintain accurate records for conservation tracking and reporting
What We're Looking For
- Genuine interest in bird conservation and land management
- Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform manual labor
- Willingness to learn ecological principles and habitat management best practices
- Attention to detail in field data collection and record-keeping
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a conservation team
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (preferred)
- High school diploma or equivalent
