Apera AI Inc
Apera is an innovative, Vancouver-based company at the forefront of robotics, AI, and machine vision — recognized with the 2025 Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation Leadership Award and the 2024 BC Tech “Company of the Year, Growth” award. We’re on a mission to redefine AI-driven robotic vision.
Apera AI helps manufacturers make their factories more flexible and productive. Robots enhanced with Apera’s software have 4D Vision — the ability to see and grasp objects with human-like capability. Challenging applications such as bin picking, sorting, packaging, and assembly are now open to fast, precise, and reliable automation. We work with the world’s leading automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.
Our portfolio spans Vue (our 4D Vision software), Forge (a no-code simulation and AI training studio where customers build, validate, and de-risk robotic cells before any hardware is bought), and VuePod, our new turnkey, productized bin-picking cell.
Role Overview:
Apera AI is seeking a Roboticist (Co-op) for the 8 months term period (Sep 2026 – April 2027). You will collaborate with experienced engineers and researchers in industrial robotics and 3D vision. Your focus will be on integrating mechanical engineering and mechatronics into robotics projects. This role combines development, testing, and implementation of robotic systems that interact with the physical world in complex environments.
This role is based in-person at our Vancouver office.
Key Responsibilities
- Robot Program Development – Collaborate with senior engineers to create and optimize robot programs using 3D vision software for tasks such as bin picking and path planning.
- Mechanical Design – Contribute to the design of fixtures, camera mounts, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) for integrating 3D vision with robots.
- Lab Testing – Build, assemble, and test mechanical components and robotic systems; ensure performance and reliability standards are met.
- New Technology Development – Support R&D in mechatronics, automation, and robotics; integrate new hardware solutions into robotic systems.
- Data Analysis – Collect and analyze experimental data to evaluate performance, troubleshoot issues, and propose improvements.
- Documentation – Maintain detailed records of designs, experiments, and procedures; contribute to user guides and technical documentation.
- Collaboration – Work with cross-functional teams (software, hardware, product management) to ensure smooth integration of vision systems and mechanical components.
- Problem Solving – Identify and troubleshoot challenges in hardware integration; propose creative solutions to overcome technical barriers.
Basic Qualifications
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
- Strong mechanical design skills, including proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks).
- Interest in robotics, computer vision, and mechatronics concepts.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Enthusiasm for cutting-edge technology and a passion for robotics
Nice To Have
- Familiarity with industrial robotics, end of arm tooling, and sensors.
- Extra-curricular Mechatronics Projects that demonstrate interest in robotics, mechanical design, and mechatronics design.
Why You’ll Love It Here
- Purpose with impact: Help enable smarter, safer automation in real industries
- Learning by doing: Apply academic knowledge to real production systems
- Supportive culture: Collaborative, curious, and people-first
- Great location: Gastown office with transit access and a vibrant tech community
The compensation for this co-op role is CAD $3,600 to $4,500 per month. This is your opportunity to gain hands-on learning experience in one of the fastest-growing industries at the intersection of robotics, AI, and industrial automation.
