Payroll Technician I/II

Sacramento State seeks a detail-oriented Payroll Technician I/II for a full-time position supporting payroll operations at our Sacramento, California campus. In this role, you will ensure accurate, timely processing of university payroll while supporting compliance with federal, state, and institutional requirements.

About the Role

As a Payroll Technician I/II, you will be the backbone of our payroll function, managing multiple aspects of employee compensation administration. You'll work with current payroll systems and technology to process payments, maintain records, and provide support to our diverse workforce across the university.

What You'll Do

• Process biweekly and monthly payroll for faculty, staff, and student employees
• Verify timekeeping data, leave balances, and other payroll inputs for accuracy
• Generate payroll reports and reconciliations; identify and resolve discrepancies
• Maintain confidential personnel and compensation records in compliance with regulations
• Respond to employee inquiries regarding paychecks, deductions, and tax withholding
• Calculate payroll deductions, benefits contributions, and tax withholdings
• Support benefits administration and payroll-related system updates
• Coordinate with Human Resources, Finance, and departmental managers on payroll matters

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent education
• One or more years of payroll processing or accounting experience
• Proficiency with payroll software and spreadsheet applications
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in numerical work
• Knowledge of federal and state payroll tax regulations and compliance
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly
• Reliable, organized approach to managing multiple priorities
