Head of Grounds (Construction Services)

UMass Amherst seeks an accomplished professional to serve as Head of Grounds (Construction Services), leading the university's grounds and construction services operations from our Amherst location. This full-time, onsite role offers the opportunity to shape the outdoor environment of a major research institution while managing construction, maintenance, and improvement initiatives that impact thousands of students, faculty, and visitors daily.

About the Role

As Head of Grounds (Construction Services), you will direct all facets of grounds-related construction projects, day-to-day maintenance operations, and property enhancement efforts across the UMass Amherst campus. Working within the Facilities Management division under Administration and Finance, you'll oversee budgets, coordinate personnel, manage vendor relationships, and ensure that campus grounds meet both functional and aesthetic standards while supporting the university's operational and strategic objectives.

What You'll Do

• Plan, oversee, and manage construction projects that improve campus grounds infrastructure and landscaping
• Direct ongoing maintenance operations including seasonal grounds care and property upkeep
• Develop and manage departmental budgets and capital project funding
• Supervise grounds staff and coordinate with external contractors, vendors, and service providers
• Ensure compliance with university policies, environmental standards, and safety regulations
• Collaborate with campus departments to support events, commencement activities, and special functions
• Monitor equipment inventory, schedule maintenance, and identify operational efficiencies

What We're Looking For

• Extensive experience in grounds management, landscape construction, or facilities operations
• Proven leadership managing teams, budgets, and construction or capital improvement projects
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, equipment, and seasonal operations
• Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a complex, mission-driven environment
