Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is hiring a Hardware Engineering Technician I to join its research and development team at its headquarters in Pullman, Whitman County — a full-time, on-site position at one of the power industry's most respected engineering organizations.

About the Role

As a Hardware Engineering Technician I at SEL, you'll be embedded in an R&D environment where precision and curiosity drive the work. You'll evaluate prototype hardware at every stage of development — from bare boards to integrated units — and dig into component-level failures with a hands-on, investigative mindset. This is a role for someone who genuinely enjoys figuring out why something isn't working and documenting exactly what they found.

What You'll Do

  • Build, assemble, and bring up prototype PCBs and hardware units in support of active engineering development programs
  • Execute structured test plans against prototype assemblies and capture detailed, reproducible test data
  • Perform component-level troubleshooting using laboratory instruments including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, logic analyzers, and power supplies
  • Interpret schematics and assembly drawings to trace faults and verify circuit behavior
  • Work across mixed-signal hardware, interfacing with both digital and analog subsystems
  • Communicate findings clearly to hardware engineers and contribute to design iteration cycles
  • Maintain organized records of test procedures, observed anomalies, and corrective actions
  • Follow ESD handling protocols and lab safety procedures at all times

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on experience with electronic hardware testing or troubleshooting, whether through work, internships, or a technical program
  • Comfort reading and interpreting electronic schematics and PCB layouts
  • Proficiency with standard bench instruments and test equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and methodical approach to problem isolation
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with engineers across disciplines
  • Associate degree in Electronics Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field — or equivalent demonstrated experience
