The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is hiring a full-time Gardener in Boston, Suffolk County to cultivate and maintain the trees, shrubs, and flowering plantings that keep our public parks, grounds, and institutional landscapes thriving.

About the Role

As a Gardener for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you will work under supervision to provide hands-on horticultural care across park areas and the grounds of public buildings and institutions in Boston. This on-site position is ideal for someone who enjoys outdoor, physical work and takes pride in nurturing healthy, attractive green spaces for the community.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide general care for trees, shrubs, and flowers throughout assigned park areas and building grounds
• Prepare and condition soil, then ready ground for new flower beds
• Plant seeds, set out potted plants, and transfer young plants into prepared beds
• Lay out and arrange flower beds for visual appeal and healthy growth
• Weed, trim, and tidy flower beds to keep plantings in good condition
• Sow and establish grass across lawns and open ground
• Trim hedges and prune flowering bushes to maintain shape and vigor
• Carry out related grounds-keeping and landscaping duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Ability to perform physical, outdoor gardening and grounds-maintenance work in Boston, Suffolk County
• Working knowledge of basic horticultural practices, including planting, soil preparation, weeding, and pruning
• Comfort using common gardening and landscaping hand tools
• Willingness to follow direction and work as part of a grounds-care team under supervision
• Reliability and a genuine interest in maintaining attractive, well-kept public spaces
