The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Lead Product Manager, Safety to help safeguard Wikipedia—one of the world's most trusted knowledge platforms, reaching more than a billion readers each month across 300+ languages. This full-time role can be based in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, or the United States.
About the Role
As Lead Product Manager, Safety, you'll guide the strategy of the Product Safety and Integrity (PSI) team, which works to keep Wikipedia stable, trustworthy, and protective of the readers and volunteers who rely on it. You'll lead a cross-functional group of engineers, designers, data scientists, and others while collaborating directly with some of Wikipedia's most trusted community members. This is a chance to shape online safety at a turning point, as AI reshapes how people find and trust knowledge. The position reports to the Group Product Manager, Safety and Security.
Key Responsibilities
- Pinpoint the highest-impact problems worth solving and steer the team's focus accordingly.
- Build new products, features, and technical defenses that make it costly and difficult for bad actors to break the security and privacy promises made to users.
- Coordinate engineering, design, data science, community management, and other functions to ship improvements iteratively.
- Prioritize features and plan product work using data alongside community feedback, with user impact as the north star.
- Engage user communities early and often, sustaining honest, lasting relationships on behalf of WMF and the PSI team.
- Stay current on developments in online safety, security, and privacy.
Qualifications
- 5+ years building internet- and consumer-facing software, including agile development; a formal Product Manager title isn't required, but a track record of leading cross-functional product initiatives is.
- Hands-on comfort querying, analyzing, and interrogating data to inform measurable decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to work across all levels of management, staff, and community.
- Skill in juggling varied responsibilities in a fast-moving, results-driven setting.
- Belief in the value of Wikipedia and its community model, with the decisiveness to act amid complex stakeholders and the candor to discuss work publicly and privately.
- Bonus: direct experience in online security and privacy, work with public online communities, or a background in software engineering or applied information security.
