About the Role

Realtor.com is looking for a Director of Engineering, for the Consumer experience to be responsible for building and operating critical product experiences, platforms and services. This leader will oversee managers and senior technical leaders across multiple domains that support core revenue for the business.

This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who can operate at both the organizational and technical levels. You will shape strategy, develop leaders, raise the engineering bar, and guide modernization efforts across web, mobile, and service boundaries. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Data, and peer engineering organizations to deliver customer value while improving speed, quality, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

What You’ll Do

Consumer Strategy & Execution

  • Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, and business stakeholders to shape roadmaps that improve consumer experience and business performance
  • Translate company and org strategy into engineering plans, staffing priorities, delivery milestones, and measurable outcomes
  • Drive execution across a portfolio of initiatives with varying levels of ambiguity, dependency complexity, and organizational visibility

Technical Strategy and Execution

  • Set technical direction across a diverse portfolio of consumer applications, platforms, and services
  • Guide architectural decisions spanning web, native, backend, and platform boundaries
  • Lead modernization efforts that improve scalability, consistency, observability, security, and developer productivity
  • Raise the quality bar for engineering design, code health, testing strategy, CI/CD, reliability, and operational excellence using AI from the get go

AI and Engineering Effectiveness

  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices that improve planning, coding, testing, documentation, and operational workflows
  • Help the organization evolve toward systems and practices that are easier for both humans and AI tools to understand, operate, and extend
  • Build an engineering organization that can scale quality and delivery without scaling complexity at the same rate

People & Organization

  • Lead an engineering organization through managers and senior leaders, creating clarity in structure, ownership, and accountability
  • Coach, develop, and support leaders through regular feedback, performance management, succession planning, and career growth
  • Create an inclusive, high-accountability culture where engineers and leaders can do strong work, grow their impact, and operate with trust
  • Hire and retain strong engineering talent while maintaining a high bar for leadership, technical judgment, and collaboration

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 5 years leading engineering teams, including managing managers
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong technical foundation in modern web development and architecture (TypeScript, React, GraphQL, AWS).
  • Comfortable operating across levels: from strategy to critical technical and delivery decisions.
  • Strong instinct for connecting engineering execution to business metrics: you think in terms of conversion, retention, and revenue impact, not just shipping features.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication and stakeholder management able to influence without authority, represent platform value to product and business leaders, and navigate competing priorities across multiple stream-aligned teams
  • A collaborative, empathetic leader with strong cross-functional communication skills.
  • Ability to identify and utilize each individual team members strengths, benefiting the greater organization

Preferred

  • Experience with AI developer tooling strategy: evaluating, deploying, and driving adoption of AI-assisted development tools across an engineering organization
  • Exposure to commerce, subscription systems, or monetization surfaces.
  • Familiarity with modern web and service architectures using technologies such as GraphQL, AWS, event-driven systems, observability platforms, and CI/CD pipelines in large engineering environments.
  • Experience with mobile  (iOS/Android architecture, React Native or native)
