The City of McFarland in Mc Farland, Kern County, is seeking an experienced Community Development Director to lead the municipality's planning, building, and economic development operations. About the Role
As Community Development Director, you will oversee all facets of the City's development activities and serve as the principal leader driving McFarland's long-term growth and advancement. You will manage a skilled team, direct key municipal functions, and work closely with City leadership and community stakeholders.
What You'll Do
- Lead the planning department and establish comprehensive strategies for community development and land use
- Oversee building operations, permitting processes, and code compliance to protect public safety and ensure regulatory adherence
- Identify funding opportunities, write grants, and manage grant-funded programs that support community initiatives
- Drive economic development and business recruitment efforts to create local opportunity and investment
- Supervise and mentor a diverse team of planning and development professionals
- Manage administrative operations, budgets, and records for all development programs
- Collaborate with City Council, staff, and the community on development policy and future planning
What We're Looking For
- Proven leadership experience directing a planning or development department in a municipality
- Strong knowledge of planning principles, municipal codes, and land use law
- Demonstrated expertise in grant writing and grant fund management
- Background managing code enforcement or building inspection operations
- Track record of success in municipal economic development and business attraction
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills across diverse audiences
- Strategic planning ability, strong organizational skills, and commitment to transparent governance
Position Details
Employment type: Full-time contract. Annual salary: $95,000–$115,000.
