About the Role
As an Assistant Public Defender I, you will serve as an advocate and counselor for indigent clients navigating the court system. You'll handle cases across multiple court divisions, developing strong courtroom skills and legal strategy while ensuring your clients receive competent, zealous representation. This position offers exposure to diverse case types and the opportunity to grow as a trial attorney.
What You'll Do
- Represent indigent clients in Magistrate Court, Traffic Court, and State Court proceedings
- Conduct client interviews, case investigations, and legal research
- Negotiate with prosecutors and prepare settlement agreements when appropriate
- Advocate for clients' rights during hearings, trials, and appeals
- Manage case files and meet all filing deadlines and court requirements
- Assist on cases of routine complexity and collaborate with senior public defenders on more complex matters
- Maintain professional relationships with judges, court staff, and opposing counsel
What We're Looking For
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Active Georgia bar license or eligibility to obtain one
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a legal team
- Commitment to the public defender mission and client advocacy
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
