About the Role
The Atlantic seeks an experienced Art Director to oversee visual direction and illustration strategy across our editorial output. You'll be instrumental in developing compelling visual narratives that enhance our journalism, working across our daily news cycle, long-form digital features, and print magazine. This role combines hands-on design and illustration work with creative leadership, allowing you to both produce original work and guide the artistic vision of our team.
What You'll Do
- Conceive, develop, and execute original illustrations that serve our editorial storytelling and connect with our audience
- Direct and commission assignment work from illustrators and visual artists, providing clear creative direction and feedback
- Collaborate with editors, writers, and reporters to develop visual approaches that elevate breaking news and investigative features
- Oversee visual consistency and quality across digital platforms, print editions, and special editorial projects
- Contribute to the magazine's visual identity through cover concepts, feature design, and special project execution
- Stay informed of visual trends in journalism and design while maintaining The Atlantic's distinctive editorial voice
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as an art director or senior designer in journalism, media, or editorial environments
- Strong portfolio demonstrating original illustration work or clear direction of illustrative projects
- Deep knowledge of contemporary illustration, visual design, and how compelling imagery enhances editorial narratives
- Experience commissioning creative talent and providing constructive, visionary feedback
- Ability to work rapidly on daily deadlines while maintaining high artistic standards
- Proficiency with design software and digital publishing workflows
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across editorial teams
