The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is hiring a full-time Farm Products Grading Inspector 1 to serve Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, and Orleans counties. In this role, you'll inspect and grade agricultural commodities at farms, facilities, and markets throughout Western New York, ensuring products meet state and federal quality standards while protecting both producers and consumers.
About the Role
As a Farm Products Grading Inspector 1, you'll conduct on-site evaluations of agricultural products across your assigned county territory. This hands-on position combines technical knowledge of grading standards with practical field work and documentation. You'll support New York State's mission to maintain food safety, enforce regulatory compliance, and strengthen the integrity of our agricultural industry.
What You'll Do
- Inspect and grade agricultural commodities for quality, maturity, and compliance with state and federal standards
- Evaluate products at farms, storage facilities, processing plants, and distribution points
- Document inspection results, test findings, and compliance determinations in departmental systems
- Communicate inspection outcomes to agricultural producers and facility operators
- Investigate reported violations and verify corrective actions
- Maintain accurate records and prepare inspection reports for departmental review
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for field travel across assigned counties
- Physical ability to perform inspection duties including standing, walking, and lifting
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping
- Effective communication skills with agricultural producers and facility staff
- Knowledge of or willingness to develop expertise in agricultural grading standards and food safety regulations
