AI FinOps Engineer

Nelnet seeks a full-time AI FinOps Engineer to join our team in Champion, Chase County. As we expand our innovative operations across student loan servicing, professional services, payments processing, renewable energy, and education solutions, we're looking for a technical expert to optimize cloud costs and drive financial operations efficiency through artificial intelligence.

What This Role Involves

In this position, you'll bridge cloud infrastructure and financial operations at Nelnet, leveraging AI and machine learning to forecast, monitor, and optimize spending across our diversified business platforms. You'll work with real-time data to identify cost-saving opportunities, implement automation that reduces waste, and build predictive models that guide strategic infrastructure decisions.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Monitor cloud resource utilization and spending across Nelnet's infrastructure, using data-driven tools to identify inefficiencies
• Build and maintain AI models that forecast cloud costs and recommend optimization strategies
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to implement cost-reduction initiatives without compromising performance
• Develop dashboards and reporting systems that provide clear visibility into financial metrics for technical and business leadership
• Design automation workflows that apply machine learning insights to real-time resource management
• Document best practices and lead training sessions to help teams adopt FinOps principles

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and demonstrated cost-optimization expertise
• Strong foundation in Python, Java, or similar languages for building analytical and automation tools
• Solid understanding of machine learning fundamentals and ability to work with data science teams
• Familiarity with FinOps frameworks, billing APIs, and cost allocation strategies
• Excellent communication skills to translate technical findings into business impact
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Finance, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
